Following the huge success of Uganda 2017, we had planned to return to Kinyerere Primary in 2020 ... but it was not be. However, we are delighted to announce that in the summer of 2023, we hope to return to Kinyerere Primary School and continue the close relationship we have created with this school in rural southern Uganda.
This fantastic 14 day expedition to Uganda, one of the poorest countries in the world, will begin with an incredibly worthwhile community project. In 2017, we rebuilt a block of three classrooms at Kinyerere Primary School. The group had to learn how to mix concrete and plaster (bearing in mind there was no electricity and no generator), apply these to the floors and walls, lay concrete floors, undercoat the walls, paint and then decorate the walls, and build and varnish new desks for each of the three classrooms.
In addition, we had a solar panel installed providing electricity which allowed for evening classes in the school, donated milking goats and installed guttering and water butts to ensure the children had fresh water for handwashing. The tremendous hard work and effort saw a fantastic new classroom block built for the children to learn in.
There is a desperate need to improve sanitation and clean water provision in the school, which will be the focus of the 2023 trip. As well as the manual work, there will be plenty of time to have fun with the local children who simply love to learn new games and sports. We will organise lessons and they will teach us local dances and traditional songs, culminating in a celebration of our partnership on the final day of our project. A visit to the local community will help us appreciate the hardships that these families face, while remaining positive and generous in spirit.
After all the hard work, the party will head off on safari in the Queen Elizabeth National Park before completing the adventure of a lifetime tracking wild chimpanzee!
Below is just a small selection of the many images from the 2017 trip.
Uganda 2023 is open to any pupil currently in Third to Fifth Year (Fourth to Sixth Year in session 2022-23).
