British Boating Double Champion

19 September 2018 | Tagged: Powerboating

Second Year pupil Oban Duncan has excelled on the water over the last few weeks as she was crowned both British Powerboating Sprint Champion and RYA Honda RIB Champion for 2018!

Title One... GP British Sprint Championship

In August, competing for iPowerboat Racing Team in the GP British Sprint Championship at Stewartby Watersports Club, north of London, Oban took her place in the GT15 sprint event.

Her main opposition came in the form of the previous year's GT15 Sprint champion, with a weekend of racing involving four heats, three of which count towards the overall result.

Oban won heats 1 and 2 on day one. However, the previous year's champion won heat 3, ensuring an exciting finale to the competition. Thankfully, Oban was able to expertly close off the final heat, becoming the first ever Scot and rookie driver to win a British Sprint Championship in their first season of GT15 racing.

Title Two... RYA Honda RIB Championship

Just over a month later, Oban won her second British Championship title of the year at the RYA Honda RIB Championships, taking place at the Southampton Boat Show on Sunday 16th September.

As opposed to the 'heats' format of the previous competition, Oban's challenge on this occasion was to set the fastest time around a series of buoys, keeping control of the Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) to ensure no mistakes that led to time penalties.

With two opportunities to set the pace, Oban set a time of 64 seconds, which no other competitor was able to better, meaning Oban took home the trophy yet again.
