What a Weekend!

High School pupils defied a bitterly cold wintery weekend to impress at national rowing and swimming championships, as well as winning multiple medals at a West District cross country competition.

Fifth Year rowing squads headed to the Lee Valley VeloPark at the Olympic Park in London to compete in the British Indoor Championships on Saturday, following on from winning Gold at last month's Scottish Schools' Indoor Rowing Championships.

Taking part in a competition featuring Olympic cyclist-turned-rower Sir Bradley Wiggins, High School pupils enjoyed competing against the cream of the British crop. In the Junior Boys' and Junior Girls' 8 Minute Relay races, the Scottish Gold medal winning teams gave it their all, with the S5 Boys' teamAngus BarrettBen HuttonScott McDonald and Tommy Whitelaw - finishing 8th out of 21 teams and the S5 Girls' teamAlice BaxendaleJasmine GillespieHelena Gronski and Millie Haldane - finishing 9th out of 45 teams.

There was also a High School presence at the Scottish National Short Course Swimming Championships, taking place at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh over the weekend. Again, the quality on show at the championships was of the 'impressive' variety - summed up perfectly by the presence of Commonwealth champions and GB Olympians Hannah Miley and Ross Murdoch.

Therefore it was no mean feat for Anna Fleming (S6) to reach multiple finals throughout the course of the championships, particularly impressing to win Silver in the 100m Individual Medley, as well as boasting 5th place finishes in both the 100m and 50m Butterfly events.

Despite the plummeting temperatures, some particularly brave High School pupils did face up to the icy weather, with a number competing in the Lindsays West District Cross Country Championships at Irvine Moor Racecourse on Saturday.

Anya MacLean (S2) continued an impressive year in athletics as she won Gold in the U15 Girls race, while Lorn Webster (S5) and Fergus Currie (S1) finished as runners-up in the U17 and U13 Boys' races, winning Silver medals.

These individual results also contributed towards U15 Girls' team Silver and U17 Boys' team Gold for their running club Garscube Harriers.
