Summer Sporting Stars!

Many pupils spent their summer participating and excelling in a variety of sports. Here are some examples of the wide array of sporting successes High School pupils achieved over the last few months.

Hamish Stewart (S6) had a successful week in Cyprus as he participated in both the Boys' Singles and Doubles competitions at the ITF Aphrodite Cup in Nicosia, Cyprus.

The Doubles competition saw Hamish and partner Ewen Lumsden overcome Cypriot and Italian opposition to reach the Final, where they faced their British teammates Douglas MacIntosh and Aidan McHugh. Unfortunately, they came up just short, going down 7-5, 7-5 in a hard-fought Final.

Hamish competed very well in the Singles competition too, coming through three qualifying rounds that saw him defeat Cypriot, Italian and South African opposition. In the competition proper, Hamish knocked out the tournament number one seed and boys' world 185 seed from Cyprus. He reached the semi final, losing out in a competitive match against his Doubles partner, Ewen Lumsden.

Conor McGrath Williams (S3) has been selected to represent the U16 Central District tennis team. He will be part of a side that will compete at Strathallan at the end of September.

At the end of June, Anna Fleming (S5) won four Junior Titles (50m/100m Freestyle; 50/100m Butterfly) and set a new Scottish Junior record in the 50m Fly race in the Scottish National Swim Championships at Tollcross Swimming Pool.

At the British Summer Championships in Sheffield at the end of July, Anna won a Gold & three Silver medals in her age group. Her Gold medal swim in the 50m Fly race saw her agonisingly miss out on the 15 Years old British record by 0.06 seconds! Her time was, however, an improvement on her own Scottish Junior record.

Regional Rugby Representation

Rugby stars Stuart Ferguson (S6), Callum Coats and Murray Godsman (both S5) were all selected as part of the U18 Glasgow & The West starting XV who faced an Edinburgh side in the BT Sport Rugby Academy Age-Grade Regional Finals Day at Murrayfield Stadium on Sunday 21st August.

With Mixed results in previous rounds, the Glasgow & the West side faced Edinburgh in the 3rd/4th place match, with the game ending in a 19-19 draw. Murray played as Full Back, Stuart was the Hooker and Callum was the Number 8.

Athletics Success

Alice Baxendale (S4) won a Gold and Bronze medal at the Scottish Age Group Athletics Championships on Saturday 20th August, with Anya MacLean (S1) also winning a Bronze in the U13 1500m race.

Anya has also been selected for the U12 Scotland Triathlon team and competed against England, Ireland and Wales on Sunday 4th September at Strathclyde Park in Glasgow.

Football Selection

Georgia Crooks (S3) has been invited to attend the Scotland Womens' U15s Football Training Camp at the new Oriam National Performance Centre at Heriot Watt University in September.

Jude Bannatyne (S1) was afforded an excellent opportunity as he attended a gymnastics training session in late August with Paul Hall, leader of the Scottish National Performance Programme.

Cricket Century

High School cricketer Sam Greene (S4) recorded an impressive unbeaten century for West of Scotland Cricket Club against Helensburgh on the 24th June. This wasn't the first time Sam had achieved this feat, having previously done the same in a fixture for the School against The Glasgow Academy last May.

Well done to Liam Taylor (S1) who finished in a very creditable T16th position at the Scottish U14 Junior Championship at Glencorse Golf Course, Penicuik, on Friday 26 August.

High School pupils are already recording further sporting successes and we've barely began our Autumn Term!
