New Year Sports Updates

8 January 2016 | Tagged: Badminton, Football, Skiing, Swimming

We might only be days into the new year but already we have a fine list of sporting achievements and national squad selections to tell you about from before Christmas and into the current Spring term.

  • Well done to S2 pupils, Georgia and Mhairi Crooks (pictured above), who represented the Scottish Independent Schools Football Association U16 side against their English counterparts in mid-December. Although the Scottish team suffered a 3-0 defeat (losing two early goals in typical Scottish fashion!), Georgia and Mhairi performed well and enjoyed the fantastic facilities on hand at St George’s Park National Football Centre in Staffordshire.
  • In November, swimmer, Anna Fleming (S4) became the fastest 15 year old girl in the UK. Now, she is setting more records in the pool! Between 11-13th December, Anna competed in the Scottish National Short Course Championships in Edinburgh, swimming excellently to win Gold Medals in the Junior Category (U16) in all five of her events (50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle, 50m Butterfly and the 100m Butterfly), and setting a new Scottish age group record in the 50m Butterfly event. She was also a part of the City of Glasgow Junior Girls’ Relay team who won Gold in the 4x100m Freestyle race. Anna then took part in the British National Short Course Winter Meet in Sheffield, where she won Silver Medals in the Junior Category in all three events in which she competed (100m Freestyle, 50m Butterfly and 100m Butterfly). Her times in each of these events were new Scottish age group records and her time for the 50m Butterfly was a new Scottish Junior record. Even more impressively, her times of 55.61 seconds for the 100m Freestyle and 27.11 seconds for the 50m Butterfly leave her currently ranked second in the all-time British Swimming rankings for girls aged 15 years in each of these short course (25m pool) events.
  • Rachel Sugden (S3) had many successes in Badminton last term, including winning a Gold Star event and competing internationally for Scotland at age-group level (more on that here). Rachel is continuing to rack up the air miles this term as she has been selected to represent Scotland in the European U15 Championships, taking place in Kazan, Russia, from 19-21st February. She was one of four selected to represent the Scottish U15 team by coach Diana Koleva. We wish Rachel the best of luck at the tournament in February.
  • Congratulations to Helena Gronski (S3) who has been selected to train and race with the British Nordic Youth and Development Ski Squads. We wish her all the best on this excellent opportunity as she attends training/racing camps both in mid-February and early April.
