Sixth Year

One of the key features of a Sixth Year at The High School of Glasgow is the variety of courses that are available to pupils and, to a considerable extent, the ability for timetables to be tailored to pupils' individual needs.

The Sixth Year aims to develop pupils academically not just to enable them to achieve entry to Higher Education but so that they do well when they reach the next stage of their education. We see the Sixth Year as a systematic preparation for independent studying and the different styles of teaching met in Higher Education. We also seek to provide good advice and information regarding choices of courses in university or college. Such academic training and help is, however, only one part of the equation.

Equally important is our attempt to make Sixth Year a time of self-appraisal and self-development for all our pupils. Much of the validity of the Sixth Year revolves around this maturing process. In particular, the Liberal Studies Course attempts to give them support in producing a CV, in form filling, preparing for interviews and developing inter-personal skills. Being able to present oneself on paper and in person is crucial - how, after all, can they expect interviewers to find out their strengths, if they themselves do not seem to know what they are? Part of the Sixth Year is structured round this aim.

Lecture Series

The weekly Sixth Form Lecture Series is designed to compliment the existing range of activities and opportunities offered to Sixth Form and to further enrich the overall Sixth Form experience. This series of lectures aims to provide opportunities for broadening minds, inspiring and provoking students and to give them the chance to listen and discuss some of the key issues of the day with some of the most inspiring speakers around.
