Jessica Wins UK Cooking Crown

Third Year chef Jessica Mitchell was yesterday crowned national champion for 2019 at the Springboard Future Chef UK Finals in London.

Taking place at Westminster Kingsway College, Jessica came up against eleven other aspiring chefs at the national final, having been whittled down from 14,000 young UK chefs who began the competition at the school heats stage and came through local and regional finals earlier in the session. The twelve UK finalists were tasked with creating three portions of a two course meal in just two hours, in order to impress a judging panel of eleven prestigious names from the UK catering world.

The panel included Head Judge, David Mulcahy, Food Development and Innovation Director for Sodexo UK and Ireland; Mark Heirs, Private Chef of the Year for 2018; Steve Groves, Head Chef at Roux at Parliament Square; Sophie Michell, Executive Chef at of Home House Private Members Club in London, and Catrin Manning, winner of the 2018 Springboard Future Chef competition. Celebrity Chef, Brian Turner CBE, hosted the finals and presented the awards.

Jessica’s winning menu consisted of a main course of chicken breast, butternut squash, confit chicken leg with fondant potato, onion and carrot, followed by a dessert of apple and frangipane tart with a vanilla pod parfait and caramelised apple.

The judging panel were incredibly impressed with the taste and appearance of Jessica’s dishes, as well as the level of skill and professionalism she displayed over the course of the two hours. Despite this year's finalists showing "the highest level of cooking skills in the history of the competition" the judging panel declared Jessica a clear winner who “stood out from the crowd.“, awarding her the Future Chef National Final trophy for 2019. 

Jessica shared her success with Jav Aziz, Executive Chef at Ibrox Stadium, who has mentored her throughout all the stages of the Future Chef competition.
