About Our Support for Learning Department

The Support for Learning Department offers support and advice to pupils, staff, and parents on strategies to optimise learning and attainment. The support offered aims to be flexible to help address individual need as it arises. The department also liaises with external agencies.

Learning support staff may offer additional support to pupils within the class and advice to class teachers on the suitability of strategies and materials for individual pupils. Some pupils may experience difficulties due to a specific learning difficulty and benefit from being taught strategies The learning support offered will not generally involve individual sessions during class time as extraction can cause subject continuity problems. If a need arises for individually - targeted support outwith the classroom, this will usually be offered at lunchtime, before or after school. In addition, the department screen for a variety of difficulties when a pupil has been referred by teaching staff or parents.

Starting at the end of third year, study skill sessions are offered before school and lunch time sessions offered in specific subject related skills e.g. types of History questions. Work is also carried out to raise self- awareness of difficulties and learning styles.

The Learning Support Department  co-ordinates the requests for special arrangements from the SQA, enters the data on to the system and produces SfL exam timetables from Transitus to Sixth Year, including the SQA exams.
