About Our Biology Department

Biology is taught as part of the Junior Science programme in Transitus and First Year, and as a separate subject from Second Year onwards. We are fortunate to have the use of fantastic facilities, consisting of three spacious teaching laboratories and a dedicated Sixth Form laboratory which allows Advanced Higher investigations to be set up and worked on continuously. Facilities also include a spacious greenhouse, featuring self-irrigating and self-ventilating systems, that is large enough to accommodate considerable groups of pupils who can be practically involved in the propagation and maintenance of the plants they will use in experiments.

At all levels, great emphasis is placed on the development of scientific skills. Enquiry-led learning and investigative approaches are used wherever possible. Practical work is extensive and challenging (often involving fieldwork) and we are very fortunate to have superb resources to enhance the teaching and learning experience (e.g. digital microscopes are used in each laboratory in conjunction with conventional light microscopes). We are also able to run advanced practical sessions such as the Polymerase Chain Reaction in school through the acquisition of thermocyclers and large electrophoresis tanks.

Biology is a dynamic and constantly evolving subject which makes a major contribution to numerous areas of modern life. Its study is of great intrinsic interest for many pupils and is also a natural introduction to a range of courses and careers beyond school. These range from Zoology, Marine Biology and Sports Science to Immunology, Cell Biology, Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine. Its importance and popularity in school continues to grow.
