HSOG PE Department in Conversation with...

1 May 2020

Three weeks, Three Scottish Captains, Three Interviews.

The High School of Glasgow PE staff wanted to help keep pupils inspired and engaged during lockdown so have created their own weekly video interviews, ‘HSOG PE Department in conversation with...’

In the first three weeks, the department have managed to get on board three of the biggest names in Scottish Sport; Scotland Rugby Captain Stuart Hogg, Scottish Hockey Captain Kaz Cuthbert and Scottish Cricket Captain Kyle Coetzer MBE.

Each interview takes place over Zoom and lasts between 20 and 40 minutes. Different members of the School PE department ask the sports stars questions on their life at school, their journey to becoming a professional athlete and of course their sporting career.

The department, headed up by Director of Sport Mr Phil Smith, came up with the idea of reaching out to their own contacts in the industry and asking them to take part. The weekly video interviews are streamed on the School’s YouTube, Facebook and Instagram platforms for pupils, parents and the wider community to watch. Pupils are also sent the videos during their weekly PE classes.

Head of Rugby, Mr Finlay Gillies said, “We wanted to created some inspiring content for the pupils to watch during lockdown. Many of our pupils take part in two or three School sports teams, some aspiring to pursue a career in the industry once leaving. We thought hearing from top sports men and women in different fields would be a good way for our pupils to hear first hand about what it takes and the dedication required to be successful.”

The weekly podcast is set to continue until Schools are reopened by the Scottish Government. The department are planning on hosting some live Zoom interviews so pupils can ask questions to the athletes.
