Third Place for Amy at UK Cookery Final

Second Year chef Amy Ashton finished third in the UK Final of the Rotary Young Chef Competition at Leeds City College on Saturday.

Amy reached the UK Final, featuring the eight brightest talents from throughout the United Kingdom, by winning the Scottish and North of England Final at the beginning of March

She was challenged to cook a three course meal in two hours in order to impress a panel of four judges from the culinary world. The judges were Danilo Trozzi, Head Chef for Filippo Berio, the competition's main sponsor; Fabrice Teston, Programme Manager for Craft and Innovation within the Food and Drink Department at Leeds City College; Luke Downing, owner of The Vice Group, a collection of five distinguished and award winning independent restaurants in Leeds; and Terri Davison, Head Pastry Chef at Harvey Nichols Leeds.

Amy's menu consisted of:

  • a starter of asparagus soup served with homemade oatcakes
  • a main course of chicken and prosciutto, stuffed with rocket pesto, served with a rosti potato, roasted red pepper and tomato sauce
  • a dessert of chocolate fondants served with a raspberry gel

Despite being one of the youngest finalist, taking on competitors up to four years her senior, Amy's calm manner and impressive cookery skills won over the judges.

She finished third in the UK, from a field of almost 4,000 initial entrants to the national competition, the culmination of months of practice and preparation throughout this session.
