Once again, High School musicians have shown dedication to their craft by spending large parts of their summer break participating in musical groups and performing around the country. Below are some examples of the commitment shown by High School musicians.

Royal Scottish National Orchestra

Fourteen High School musicians (pictured above) travelled down to London last week to sing with the RSNO at the Royal Albert Hall. Sebastian Schneeberger (S6), Amy Higgins, Adam Insall, Matthew Taylor (all S4), Annabel Davies, Aarya Gambhir, Beth Hunt, Tanvi Mantry, Libby Morgan (all S3), Elizabeth Hamilton (S2), David Hunt, Scarlet Penman, Tessa Quaile and Marianna Smith (all S1) were all part of the RSNO Chorus who performed Britton’s War Requiem on Thursday 6th September, one of the final concerts of this year's BBC Proms.

National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain

Sixth Year violinist Ella Fraser was offered a Leadership role in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain last session. She has performed in numerous concerts around the United Kingdom over the past few months, the highlight of which was performing in the BBC Proms in London at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday 4th August. Ella was part of the orchestra, conducted by George Benjamin, who performed famous works including Debussy’s La Mer and Ligeti’s Lontano on a night of spectacular music-making. The performance was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and was later shown on BBC 4.

Later this month, Ella will participate in the last of her NYOGB commitments of the year, 'Play the School', which seeks to provide "inspiring musical experiences" by taking orchestral music out of the concert hall and into secondary schools. This will take place at two schools in Nottingham and Newark.

National Youth Orchestra of Scotland

Eight High School musicians were part of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland Junior Orchestra who performed in the New Auditorium of the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Friday 20th July.

Eilidh Davidson (cello), Jessica Insall (trombone), Samantha Insall (viola) (all S5), Amy Gilson-Barnett (cello), Matthew Litherland (French horn), Amelia Neilson (clarinet) (all S4), Helena Downie (violin) (S3) and Fergus Currie (percussion) (S2), under Conductor Holly Mathieson, performed a number of works including Janacek and Grieg.

Ben Litherland (bassoon) (S6) and Reuben Gilson-Barnett (violin) (S5) were part of the NYOS Senior Orchestra who performed a summer concert 'The Power of Nature' in Ayr Town Hall on Wednesday 25th July under Conductor Catherine Larsen-Maguire.

National Youth Choir of Scotland

Sebastian Schneeberger of Sixth Year had a busy summer which included performing with the NYCOS Main Choir at the Usher Hall as part of the Edinburgh International Festival. Sebastian will also be going to New York in October to perform 'Lélio' with NYCOS in the Carnegie Hall under the baton of acclaimed Conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner.

There were also summer performances from the NYCOS Boys' Choir which included Adam Insall, Andrew Whitelaw (both S4) and Carter Roberts (S1), as well as the NYCOS Girls' Choir, featuring Maryam Khan (S5), Amy Higgins (S4) and Tanvi Mantry (S3).

Music Exams

High School musicians achieved a number of successes in music exams towards the end of last session. Of particular note were those who achieved Grade 8 with Distinction awards: Isabella Harten (piano) (S6), Daniel Bogomolnyi-Moulin (piano) (S5), Zixuan Yao (violin) (S2) and Zayd Khan (drum kit) (Transitus).
