An Update from the Music Department

New Piano Stars

Fourth Year musician Amelia Neilson was awarded second prize in the New Piano Stars competition, in association with Kawai, at the beginning of November.

Amelia competed in the Ages 15-18 category of the competition, playing 'Lotus Land' by Cyril Scott. Despite being one of the youngest competitors at just 15 years old, she finished as runner up.

Royal National Mòd

At last month's Royal National Mòd event, a festival in Dunoon celebrating Scottish Gaelic literature, song and arts, Cathal Callan of Fourth Year was placed first in Poetry Recitation (Ages 13-15 Fluent) and second in Solo Singing Boys (Ages 13-15 Fluent), while Christina Brincat of Second Year was awarded third place in the Clarsach Intermediate Solo category.

Recent Musical Performances

Helena Downie of Third Year performed with the National Children’s Orchestra in Manchester on at the end of October, while Aarya Gambhir, also of Third Year, performed as a solo singer (from within the RSNO Junior Chorus) at the Varèse Sarabande 40th Anniversary Concert, a celebration of the film label’s 40th Anniversary, on Saturday 17th November at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Aarya performed a solo in a piece by Diego Navarro, who also conducted on the night.

A number of pupils will be part of the RSNO Junior Chorus performing in the concert 'Søndergård’s Guide to the Orchestra' at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh on Friday 23rd November and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Saturday 24th November.

Elsewhere, fourteen Senior School singers performed under the baton of acclaimed Conductor and Music Director of the Royal Scottish National OrchestraThomas Søndergård, in concerts across the country during Remembrance weekend.
