Extra-Curricular Activities

Our aim is to provide a happy, caring and safe environment in which each individual is encouraged to achieve his or her full potential both academically and socially.

Extra-Curricular Clubs

With over 100 clubs to choose from, the High School of Glasgow provides every child with the opportunity to flourish in their chosen club or society.

We keep our young people busy. Participation is key. Joining in. Having a go. We give our pupils the tools, the environment and the encouragement.

Starting at Junior School, PE and Games are on every pupil’s timetable but from there pupils can take their pick of clubs and societies. From taekwondo, chess, science, book, dance, cooking, band, drama, tennis, indoor rowing, gaming and coding club to our popular sports of hockey, rugby and football.

We firmly believe that activity outside the classroom is fundamental to success in the classroom.

The Senior School grounds at Old Anniesland have five full sized floodlit rugby pitches, two state of the art hockey pitches which convert into 12 tennis courts during the summer months, alongside cricket pitches, athletics tracks and areas for field events.

Our on site facilities encourage all pupils to get involved, challenge themselves and be part of the team, with Junior School pupils regularly visiting our Senior campus to take part in sporting activity.

Our teams compete regularly within Scottish Schools Championships, national competitions and some pupils have been chosen to represent their country in worldwide events. Our pupils continually impress across numerous sports and events, some recent accolades include winning the Cricket 40 Club School of the Year, the Scottish Schools Shield for Rugby in 2018, the Girls Hockey S3 Scottish Cup, and recent national medals in aquathlon, athletics and cross country.

Music and Drama

Music and Drama play a huge part in High School life.

It is a timetabled activity for all pupils from Kindergarten up to Second Year of Senior School with hundreds choosing to get involved in School orchestras and choirs each year.

Both the Junior and Senior School benefit from impressive suites of practice rooms as well as spaces for concerts and recitals, while our community thoroughly enjoy the selection of annual concerts and productions on offer from our Music and Drama Departments.

Alongside our full time Music Department, visiting specialist teachers provide private tuition in a number of areas including strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, piano and singing.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme

The highly popular Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme offers Senior School pupils the chance to build confidence, learn new skills, help the community through volunteering and build key skills to help them navigate through adult life.

The High School of Glasgow is a recognised DofE Operating Authority and runs the award at all levels.

We passionately believe in our pupils taking ownership of their award and are delighted at the number of pupils who complete their Gold Award before leaving school.
