Announcement of new Rector

The High School of Glasgow announces the appointment of a new Rector, Ms Antonia Berry, to succeed Mr John O'Neill on his retirement from the role at the end of session in June 2025.

Ms Berry is currently Depute Rector at St Columba's School, Kilmacolm. She was educated at Howard of Effingham School, Surrey and gained a Bachelor of Arts in English and American Literature at the University of Kent. She holds a Masters degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Buckingham.

Her teaching journey began as an English and Performing Arts Teacher at Homewood School and Sixth Form Centre and continued as Head of English at Prior’s Field School, before becoming Depute Rector at St Columba’s School. In addition to her current position at St Columba’s School, she is an Associate Assessor for Education Scotland, which has responsibility for carrying out school inspections. Ms Berry has also published a number of articles on teaching and learning.

Following a thorough and exhaustive selection process, the Board of Governors noted what shines through is Ms Berry's belief that education, as she herself stated: “'is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire'; it has the power to change lives."

Commenting, Mr Greig Williamson, Chair of the Board of Governors, said:

The Governors are confident that under Antonia Berry’s leadership the High School will continue to deliver a first class, rounded education for our pupils, while expanding the School's horizons and embracing the challenges of the ever-changing educational landscape.”
