Law House raises nearly £3,000 for Battle Against Dementia

Law House raises nearly £3,000 for Battle Against Dementia

Law House hosted the first fundraising week of session 2025-26, putting on a memorable slate of events just prior to the mid-term break. Law House Captains Ben P and Eloise T can take it from here, as they kindly share their reflections on an unforgettable few days at Old Anniesland...

For Law House’s fundraising week, we had the pleasure of supporting Battle Against Dementia – a Glasgow-based charity that supports those affected by this unfortunate disease through their goal of building a dementia hub, a place for patients and their families to enjoy activities and receiving support and advice. It will feature a music area, movie area, indoor bowling and putting greens, golf simulator rooms, a coffee area, private meeting rooms and much more.

Battle Against Dementia was our chosen charity as we know that many people in our community and in Law House itself have been touched and effected by dementia in their personal lives, and this would be a great resource for them to be able to use. We were lucky enough to have Lucy M of Sixth Year bravely share in assembly her personal experience of her grandmother suffering from dementia. She spoke incredibly well and brought great meaning to why we chose to fundraise for this important cause.

Our fundraising week on Monday morning opened with the traditional and not-to-be-missed opportunity to ‘Soak the Sixth Years'. Some of our brave S6 Law pupils chose to be drenched in freezing cold water by the rest of the school! It was a great way to wake them up on a Monday morning, but not so fun for our helpers who got caught in the crossfire! Sorry…

A group of young people, likely a sports team, are sitting together in front of a brick wall, wearing matching blue uniforms.

We then hosted our very own Law Legends compete on Monday lunchtime in ‘Beat the Law Legends’. Pupils were given the chance to defeat the legends in their own sport, ranging from netball to bridge! It was a great way to kick off our fundraising week, with pupils who had beaten three or more Law Legends winning a Hallowe'en surprise!

On Tuesday, our cake and candy stall went down particularly well, with Law pupils from every year baking amazing treats for us to sell. It was greatly received by the rest of the Senior School, despite an impromptu move to the other side of the courtyard as a result of some classic Glaswegian weather.

At lunch, it was time for the showdown of the century – the much-anticipated pupils vs teachers dodgeball match! Our incredible 6L  took to the Games Hall to face off against the all-star teachers’ line-up of Dr Treacy, Mr Hunter, Miss McGilveray, Miss Head, Mr Lockyer, Mr Leggat, Mrs Armstrong, Mr McCarthy and Mr Gillies. The teachers came out triumphant after subbing in more and more teachers until they had won... as well as a few dodgy calls from our very own professional dodgeball umpire Mrs Owen, who took the match as a chance to show off her sparkly trousers!

On Wednesday, we challenged pupils with memory games at interval, paired witha spot of  mini golf at lunchtime. 5L were in charge of setting up three tee-rrific mini golf holes in the Assembly Hall, where pupils had to overcome the obstacles to win each hole in as few shots as possible!

Thursday was our final day of fundraising and we knew we had to go out with a bang. It was non-uniform day, and S6 were able to strut their stuff in Hallowe'en costumes ranging from the characters of Toy Story to The Wizard of Oz! At interval, strength was tested during our hang bar challenge during which, as the name implies, pupils had to hang from a bar for as long as they possibly could.

Thursday lunchtime was the most anticipated part of the week – the long-awaited return of Mr Campbell as Michael McIntyre in The Wheel. With a star-studded line-up of specialists and three eager contestants, it was sure to be a House show for the ages. We were lucky enough to have the Rector, Mr Robertson, Mrs Walker, Mr Smith, Lucy M (S6) and Jude M (S5) as our amazing specialists, keen to help the contestants of Mr Gillies, Mrs Owen and one of our School Captains, Tristan M (S6).

There was a very special prize up for grabs for our contestants, ensuring that Mrs Owen was very competitive (not that she wasn’t already). Anticipation was high. Who was going to win? After many incorrect answers, even more cheesy jokes from Mr Campbell and both microphones cutting out, there could only be one winner... Mr Gillies! After frequently pairing up with the Rector to become the ‘dream team’ and facing heckles from his fellow contestants, he came out triumphant to win a box of Heroes to enjoy as we headed into the half-term holiday. It was a great way to bring our fundraising week to a close – thank you to everyone who got involved!

...

We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who helped and contributed to Law House Fundraising Week. We were delighted to be able to raise the sum of £2,905, which will make a huge difference for Battle Against Dementia. Thank you!
