Law House raises over £2,000 for amputee charity ‘Finding Your Feet’
The fourth and final Fundraising Week of this session was held in March. Hear from Law House Captains, Hazel M and Hamish M, who reflect on all the preparation and organisation that went into this really successful week!
For Law Fundraising Week we had the privilege of supporting Finding Your Feet – a charity that supports individuals and families affected by amputation or limb absence. Their initiatives focus on improving physical and mental well-being through activities like swimming, climbing, gardening, yoga, and crafting. They also offer peer support sessions, such as their popular 'Ampu-Teas', where amputees can connect over coffee and conversation.
The charity was founded by Cor Hutton in 2014 after she lost her hands and legs below the knee to sepsis. Her inspiring leadership has driven the charity to become a leading resource for amputees, and we were lucky to have her come in and share her inspirational story with the school at our fundraising assembly.
Our fundraising week began with the famous cake-and-candy, where delicious bakes and snacks were brought in by pupils of Law House. The food went down a ‘treat’ – pun intended – all thanks to the help of S6 pupils who helped to sell the bakes to everyone.
On Tuesday, our poor S6 Law peers were left freezing following the infamous (in the eyes of our participants) ‘Soak-the-Sixth-Years’, where some of our S6 Law legends voluntarily opted to get freezing cold water thrown over their heads during break. Unfortunately for some, it seemed 'Soak-the-Sixth-Years' turned into 'Splash-the-Spectators' for a few unsuspecting pupils. While the Sixth Years took their soaking like champs, some of the crowd might have left feeling like honorary participants in the event. Whoops...
At Tuesday lunchtime, S5 pupils hosted their own version of ‘Gladiators’, giving pupils the opportunity to pull out all the stops and impress their fellow classmates with show-stopping moves and agility around our obstacle course.
On Wednesday, we hosted the High School’s very own fashion show, where we saw S6 boys take to the floor and walk their walk down the runway to impress the judges. The winner of the very tight competition was Max H (S6), inspired by the 90s ‘Marky’ Mark Wahlberg. From the peaky blinders to NBA all-stars, it's safe to say the crowd got their money’s worth (and their ear drums burst from some blaring and questionable theme songs).
At Thursday lunch we hosted, in our opinion, the very best house show that The High School of Glasgow has ever seen – ‘Mr Campbell’s Big Show’ – a play on Michael McIntyre’s popular show! This house show was no ordinary show as it included; Email To All – where we had access to Mr Lockyer’s email and successfully sent out a message to all staff regarding Mr Graham’s contribution, or detriment, to the senior boys' football team; we also pranked Mrs Owen in our Housemaster’s Quiz, where she watched her beloved household objects being dished out to her competitors; we also organised the Midnight Gameshow where, alongside star guests, we invaded School Captain, Ruairidh M’s, home at the unsuspecting time of 1:30am! The amazing editing of former pupil Sandy M and the S6 pupils who took time out of their beauty sleep to come and take part in this is something we are forever grateful for as it led to the greatest turnout in High School history. To conclude our pranks and jokes on pupils and teachers we threw the ultimate plot twist; surprising Mr O’Neill with the opportunity to be the unexpected 'Star of the Show'. He found himself centre stage, microphone in hand, living his secret pop star dreams. His performance may not win a Grammy, but it certainly earned him a new fan base. Rumour has it he is announcing his tour, headlining in the staffroom, Jimmie Ireland Stand and Drama Studio. Get your tickets now!
Our fundraising efforts concluded with the iconic Law pupils vs staff – where I can confirm that the great "unconcluded" match will be a sporting mystery for the ages as we did not keep track of the score. Another whoops – Law for the win! The ‘try-hard’ staff, who shall not be named... (Mr Hunter, Mr Gilles, Mr McCarthy, Mr Campion) ... are still needing regular ice bath treatment to recover from the charity match!
We are so grateful to everyone who took part and helped with Law’s Fundraising Week, as we were able to reach our target and raise an amazing £2,107.
