Pitch Perfect: Junior 6 Think Outside the Box

Pitch Perfect: Junior 6 Think Outside the Box

Junior 6 pupils recently pitched their ideas on how to positively transform the J6 Enterprise space at our recent Sharing the Learning event, displaying the power of young minds to shape and reimagine their learning environment.

High School families joined us for the morning on Friday 21st November, witnessing nine teams of entrepreneurial enthusiasts presenting to a panel of no-nonsense judges, the culmination of months of hard work committed towards their 'Enterprise' class topic.

Led by Junior 6 teachers Miss Hallam and Mrs Livingston, pupils were tasked with researching, brainstorming and getting their 'creative thinking' hats on in order to imagine how they would like to see the Junior 6 Enterprise space being used going forward, taking ownership of their entrepreneurial ideas and drawing on many skills including communication, collaboration, problem-solving and decision-making.

They devised pitches and created illustrative powerpoint presentations to help sell their ideas to our fearsome judging panel, consisting of Rector Antonia Berry, Head of the Junior School Maggie Pollock, Founder of START and HSOG’s Director of Innovation and Sixth Form Philip Ford, Head of Junior Science and Head of Senior School Chemistry Dr Nikki Penman, Junior School Teacher Lorna Lambie and Sixth Year pupil Jude M.

The Pitches

Architect Agents - Brodie, Eliza, Cara & Raphael

An ambitious proposal for a Science Lab at the Junior School. Their pitch emphasised how science fuels both creativity and imagination, offering pupils hands-on opportunities to explore the world around them.

Cool CAMMS - Max, Grace, Cora & Rohan

A compelling case for a Mindfulness Room - a dedicated space for relieving stress and anxiety. Their presentation highlighted the positive impact mindfulness can have on pupils' wellbeing, providing a valuable place of calm in the busy school day.

VEOC - Vangelis, Edward, Orla & Clara

Bringing flavour to the competition with their vision for a dedicated Cooking Space. They argued that cooking supports both mental and physical health, serves as a creative outlet and teaches a vital life skill that every child should know.

CITA - Charlotte, Ismael, Tanishq & Amelia

Their proposal for a J1 and J6 Buddy Room demonstrated core High School values that would enhance the existing buddy system. They talked about the UN Rights of the Child and noted that very few schools in Scotland offer such a dedicated space for friendships to flourish across such wide age groups.

OTB (Outside the Box) - Harriet, Louisa, Adam & Gregory

Living up to their name, they proposed an innovative STEC Hub combining Science, Technology, Engineering and Cooking. Their research showed this was the most popular option in a pupil survey, and they made a strong case for how it would develop critical thinking and teamwork skills.

Detailed Designers - Alexandra, Elvie, Venpa & Ayma

Envisioning a Student Lounge - a multi-functional space designed to boost confidence and support learning. Their pitch emphasised how this room would provide a place for pupils to do homework and build relationships with peers through collaborative study.

Four Leaf Clovers - Hugo, Felicity, Ellie & Sandy

Another cooking-focused team, they positioned their Cooking Space as both a vital life skill and a selling point for prospective parents, noting that cooking could become an additional subject on the school curriculum.

The GLANS - George, Leo, Asiya & Nayla

Their proposal for a state-of-the-art Science Lab touched on how a visit to the Senior School during J5 had inspired and motivated them to become scientists who could "change the world." They noted that spaces are limited at the Junior School Science Club and so this would provide another learning space for our "big thinkers."

Logic Leaders - Belle, Norah & Honor

Advocating for a Mindfulness Room - a calming, stress-free environment where pupils could recharge, they argued that children must have the right to a peaceful place when school or the classroom becomes too busy or noisy. Their vision included swing chairs, comfy cushions and soothing music, all designed around the principle that "a change in our life begins with a change in our minds."

...

In coming to their final decision on which team's solution for the space would move forward, the judges praised the teams for their creative team names, some excellent vocabulary and sophisticated use of language, and their "infectious passion", with all presentations proving to be polished and professional, showcasing dedication and skill.

They were also complementary of the team spirit and collaboration shown amongst Junior 6 - when some pupils fell ill, friends stepped up to help. When IT issues threatened to derail presentations, teams adapted and persevered! Our young innovators impressed with their confidence, their clarity and, most of all, their passion for their pitches!

After much deliberation, the judges announced their decision. The winners of the Junior 6 Enterprise Challenge were OTB (Outside the Box) - the team whose innovative STEC Hub captured imaginations with its unique combination of science, technology, engineering and cooking. Congratulations to Adam A, Louisa K, Gregory P and Harriet V on their well-deserved success!
