This Autumn Term, Clyde House hosted the first of four House Fundraising Weeks, raising £3,000 across a four day week ahead of the October break. Hear from Clyde House Captains Ruby I and Zayd K about how they got on!
For our annual fundraising week, Clyde House decided to support DEBRA, a charity that provides patient (and family) support for the painful, genetic skin blistering condition called Epidermolysis Bullosa. Currently, there is no cure for this condition, it can only be managed, however, DEBRA are looking to change this and are leading the way in research for a cure. We were motivated to raise money for this cause because of the pivotal role DEBRA has played for a relative of a ‘Clydee’ who is navigating life with EB.
The week commenced with a favourite, the Clyde Carnival. This involved a gym hall packed with various fun activities to challenge the Sixth Years in: from hook a duck, to ‘higher or lower’ for the prospect of winning a golden ticket to claim a prize. This was followed by an opportunity to ‘soak the Sixth Years and Mr Hunter’, however, these weren’t the only screams we heard on Tuesday! The return of the Haunted House in the Pavilion at Tuesday lunch saw many scared faces running out, courtesy of our spooky Sixth Years. On Wednesday, Clyde bakers pitched in for Cake and Candy which saw tables stacked high with delicious, sweet treats. Later in the day, the sugar highs were put to good use in our Clyde Pupils vs Teachers football game – this (unfortunately) resulted in a 2-1 loss for the pupils with Mr Kyle and Mr Campion making a formidable duo on the pitch.
Our week concluded with ‘wax the 1st XV’, who all put on brave faces as they walked out of the hall with some interesting looking legs and we eagerly anticipate the moment when the one and only Rector, Mr O’Neill, takes on the waxing strips at a later date!
The House Show saw a very entertaining rendition of the popular TV show, ‘Through the Keyhole’. This was hosted by the amazing Mr Campbell, who introduced the panel of fellow Sixth Year Clydees, who were competing against each other to see if they could guess the correct home of the respective staff member. We began with clips of the mysterious homes of Dr Clark and Mr Gillies, and we finished off with two clips of Mrs Lewis and Mr Graham’s homes - Mr Campbell even invited the lively audience to participate along with the panel.
Throughout the week, each day, Transitus to Senior 2 deciphered that morning’s clues in order to be the first to track down the Clydasaurus. Our Clyde S2 pupils also helped run guess the number of sweets in a jar and delivered Halloween messages at break time.
Although the week was a success, it wasn’t without its trials, and we quickly learnt that the key to a smooth-running week was delegation of tasks!
Overall, it was an action-packed, enjoyable week, which couldn’t have gone ahead without the help and participation of pupils and staff throughout the school. Our collective involvement managed to raise a successful total of around £3,000 for DEBRA, to support their efforts in forging a happier and healthier future for those who suffer from EB.
We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who got involved, with a particularly special thank you to our House staff, Miss Sutherland and Mr McCarthy, we couldn’t have done it without their support, participation and enthusiasm. They went above and beyond to make the week a success!
