HSOG’s Charities Committee is in full swing this term

Movember

This November, the Senior 6 boys and some members of staff are growing their moustaches in support of Movember. Hear all about why they’ve chosen to do it, and how you can show your support, from Ruairidh M, School Captain.

Movember is an annual event worldwide in which money is raised to support suicide prevention, mental health, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Moustaches are grown in support of this cause, but everyone can get involved by contributing to fundraising events! I have supported this cause on my own in the past and thought it would be a great idea to get all of the boys involved too. Not only is it good fun but it also gets us all talking.

At HSOG, teachers and most of the S6 boys have come together to grow their “mo’s” to show their support. In addition, throughout the month, pupils are organising events such as the M’Olympics, Bing’Mo, Soak the 6th Years and ‘guess the number of moustaches in the jar’, to get the rest of the School community involved. With the help of Miss Melville and the Charities Committee, HSOG seeks to bring more awareness to the Movember cause.

Christmas Fair

The Senior School Charities Committee is overseen by Miss Melville, Teacher of English, and is a dedicated, voluntary group of Sixth Year pupils who come together each year to support important causes and contribute to the wider community.

So far this year it has raised funds for many important and impactful organisations including East Park School, Scoliosis UK, Maggie's Centre, Smile Train and DEBRA, among others.

Currently, the Charities Committee are preparing for its biggest event of the year, the HSOG Christmas Fair, where they are raising money for the Volunteer Tutor Organisation (VTO). A number of Sixth Year pupils currently volunteer for the charity in one of its learning hubs to support its mission of helping primary school children from challenging backgrounds who are experiencing difficulties with their learning. The S6 pupils assist children with their homework, practice reading and maths and help them to overcome problem areas and aspects of the curriculum they may be struggling with. To find out more about HSOG’s partnership with VTO, take a look at this news story.

The Christmas Fair will be held at the Senior School on Saturday 7th of December from 11:00am to 1:30pm, providing an opportunity to buy some lovely artisan Christmas gifts and stocking fillers from a number of local businesses, while also supporting a worthy cause. We hope to see you there!
