HSOG hosts Careers Fair
HSOG hosts Careers Fair
At the start of June, the Senior School hosted its very first Careers Fair for Second Year and Fourth Year Pupils!
These year groups are key, as subject choice at National 5 and HIgher can dictate future university options. Moreover, the subjects chosen in school are often relevant to future career paths.
As a result, Head of Careers, Mrs Natalie Lawther, was keen to bring both a careers fair and a speed networking session to pupils.
The Careers Fair featured representatives from the University of Glasgow, University of Edinburgh, University of Aberdeen, Glasgow Clyde College, University of Newcastle, University of Dundee, Abertay University, Glasgow Caledonian University, University of Strathclyde, University of Stirling, University of the West of Scotland, Queen Margaret University and Lancaster University. Representatives from the Army and the SAE Institute were also in attendance.
Pupils had the chance to visit the various different stalls and chat with representatives about the courses on offer and the subject requirements for entry. This provided real world insight into life beyond school and the world of higher education. Whether someone had a clear idea of a course they wanted to study, like Engineering for example, or they didn't have a clue where to start, everyone came away armed with information and actionable next steps.
We were joined by nine individuals for our speed networking sessions which included a marine scientist, two procurator fiscals, a doctor and a TV producer, among others.
Two former pupils returned - Adam Drummond (Class of 2005), who is Rathbone’s Regional Director and Head of Glasgow, to talk about a career in finance; and Jemma Robertson (Class of 2015), Managing Director of digital marketing agency GRA, who discussed life in a fast-paced agency.
We are very grateful to a number of our current parents for agreeing to take part in the speed networking sessions and for sharing their wisdom and insight.
The final part of the day included talks for pupils with Stirling University, the University of Glasgow and Glasgow Caledonian to provide a deeper understanding of life at university.
Commenting, Mrs Lawther, Head of Careers said:
During these crucial subject choice years, it is important for young people to be exposed to the variety of careers and opportunities available post-school. One of the most powerful activities is speaking face-to-face with people in industry, universities and colleges. Today's event was a testament to the enthusiasm that Careers Fairs can spark and left many pupils inspired.”
