What Does the Average School Day Look Like?

The High School of Glasgow is an ambitious and rewarding place of learning, where every child is provided with a first-class education, incredible opportunities and memorable experiences.

In the UK, a typical school day starts at around 9am and ends at around 3pm, Monday to Friday. School admission - when the school actually allows pupils into their grounds - is generally from around 8.30am. Doors open at 8:00am each day at both our Junior and Senior School

However, the rise in popularity of pre-school clubs and breakfast clubs means that school opening times do differ, depending on what levels of childcare the school offers. After-school clubs, and homework clubs are also now common childcare add-ons to an average day of school for a child. With more parents working than ever before, schools have to cater for parents who may require an earlier drop-off and later pick-up than the average timings of a school day. You can read more about The High School of Glasgow’s Out of School Care here.

Extra-curricular activities are generally a normal part of a school day too. These are often scheduled during lunch breaks or after school when they are part of our extensive clubs and societies offering, and some extra-curricular activities, like sporting fixtures, may also be scheduled at weekends.

Kindergarten School Days

School Times

The High School of Glasgow Kindergarten operates during term time, offering early learning and childcare between the hours of 8:45am - 3:10pm. The following sessions are available:

Morning - 8:45am until 11:55am (doors open from 11:45am for collection)

Afternoon - 11:55am until 3:10pm (doors open from 3:00pm for collection)

Full Day - 8:45am until 3:10pm (doors open from 3:00pm for collection)

In order to ensure continuity for children, Kindergarten 1 (3 year-old) children are required to attend a minimum of four sessions per week, and Kindergarten 2 (pre-school) children are required to attend a minimum of five sessions per week.

Out of School Care Options

Out with the aforementioned Kindergarten timings, we offer parents further 'Wraparound Care' options. Wraparound care operates each day during school term time, between the hours of 7:45am until 8:45am and 3:10pm until 6:00pm. Parents can purchase these additional hours to meet the needs and demands of family life.

The following Wraparound Care sessions are available at the following costs:

Breakfast: 7:45am until 8:45am, £9.25

First Afternoon Session: 3:10pm until 4:30pm, £9.25

Second Afternoon Session 4:30pm until 5:55pm, £9.25

Lunchtime

Every part of each day is filled with learning experiences and opportunities for children in our care. All children who access our partnership funding provision are entitled to a funded meal or healthy snack, provided during their session(s). Parents may opt to order a hot lunch (which are ordered at the beginning of each week) or alternatively provide children with a packed lunch.

During snack break and lunch time we aim to create a home-from-home environment. Our children are encouraged to choose and prepare their own snacks, safely developing skills such as pouring, cutting and spreading. Whilst eating their food, children have time to talk with their peers, developing their social skills, garnering new relationships and allowing friendships to thrive.

Junior School (Primary School) Days

School Times

The High School of Glasgow Junior School is open to pupils from 8:00am every day, with our Junior School Office open from 8:00am until 5:00pm.

For Junior School (Primary School) pupils, the school day begins with assembly from 8:55am until 9:10am.

Thereafter, the day is divided into periods to accommodate specialist subjects, while class teachers block time for various activities.

For pupils in Junior 1-3, the school day is from 8:50am - 3:05pm (lunch from 12:20 - 1:20pm) and for pupils in Junior 4, 5 & 6, it runs from 8:50am - 3:15pm (lunch from 12:30 - 1:30pm).

Out of School Care Options

We understand that working families may require extended childcare beyond the end of the school day. Our Out of School Care (or After-School Care) service, known as 'The High Flyers' Club', provides flexible childcare every day throughout the session, from 3:05pm until 6:00pm, for Junior 1 to Junior 6 children.

Co-Curricular Opportunities

At The High School of Glasgow, we take pride in the wide variety of co-curricular activity on offer for pupils to participate in each and every day. In fact, we have so much to offer that the toughest decision our pupils face is just how they can fit in all the extra-curricular opportunities on offer to them!

Whether singing in one of our many choirs or working up a sweat with teammates during weekend sporting action; learning a language or seeking to change the world in one of our numerous extra-curricular clubs; or exploring the great outdoors with our Duke of Edinburgh's Award programme, our pupils push themselves, expanding their horizons whilst away from the classroom.

Concluding

The High School of Glasgow is an exceptional environment for a young person to experience their educational journey, offering an all-round education and unlocking the joy of learning.
