School Class Times and Structure - Everything You Need to Know

A well-constructed school timetable establishes a natural rhythm and routine, and helps pupils and teachers maximise and prioritise important components of learning.

The following article will explore school class times and structure at The High School of Glasgow and why it’s important.

Why Class Structure and Timetables are Important

Educational research has proven that within a structured learning environment, pupils are more likely to succeed and develop both personal and academic growth. A classroom with a structured, comprehensive timetable means less opportunities for wasted teaching time.

Naturally, class times and the structure of a school timetable impact essentially all operational activities within a school. At The High School of Glasgow, we have established regular, efficient routines for both pupils and teachers. These practices provide smooth transitions and extensive learning opportunities - due to proper optimisation for lessons and extra-curricular activities.

Junior School Times

The High School of Glasgow Junior School is open to pupils from 8:00am every day. The school day ends between 3:05pm and 3:15pm, with after school options available up to 6:00pm. The Junior School Office open from 8:00am until 5:00pm.

For Junior School pupils, the school day begins with assembly from 8:55am until 9:10am.

Thereafter, the day is divided into periods to accommodate specialist subjects, while class teachers block time for various activities.

For pupils in Junior 1-3, the school day is from 8:50am - 3:05pm (lunch from 12:20 - 1:20pm) and for pupils in Junior 4, 5 & 6, it runs from 8:50am - 3:15pm (lunch from 12:30 - 1:30pm).

Junior School Class Specialist Subjects

Pupils acquire educational merit at our Junior School by working within a resourceful, dynamic and nurturing classroom environment.

From Kindergarten, our pupils have access to specialist teaching in a number of subjects including Drama, French, Music and Physical Education.

Art and Computing are part of the Junior School curriculum from Junior 1, while children are taught by a specialist Computing Teacher from Junior 5 onwards.

The introduction of these specialist subjects at an early age allows our pupils to develop an all-round skill base, fostering their passions and increasing their confidence and self-belief.

A series of multiple extensions to the original High School of Glasgow building in recent years have included the addition of a two-storey Science Wing in 2008 and the creation of a dedicated state-of-the-art Health and Wellbeing Centre, opened in 2017.

The John Shaw Science Wing was expanded once again to include a third floor and the creation of four extra classrooms housing Geography and Modern Studies, a department base and a flexible learning area complete with 3D printers and laser cutters. This was officially opened in 2022.

All of our classrooms are equipped with the latest technology, including interactive smart boards and our excellent library is at the heart of the Senior School, housing a wide range of more than 12,000 books.
