How To Raise a Happy and Confident Child

How to build children's confidence can be a challenging issue for many parents.

Confident children are more likely to try their best and feel proud of what they can do. Building a child's level of self-esteem and confidence helps them cope with mistakes, and it helps kids try again - even if they fail at first.

As a result, confident children perform better academically and believe in themselves more.

In this article we will discuss how to raise a confident child.

Forgive Mistakes and Embrace Imperfection

Perfectionism is often seen as a positive and desirable attribute. You'll often hear certain kids described as 'the perfect child’.

However, striving for perfection in children can often lead to parents being overly critical, which in turn leaves children afraid to make mistakes. But mistakes teach children what does not work and encourages them to create new ways of thinking and doing. This is an important life lesson - understanding that adversity is needed to overcome challenges in life.

As a parent, it is important to remember that children obtain references each time they use different approaches to a problem to achieve their goals. Kids become more confident each time they try something new.

Children do not gain knowledge without making mistakes. Imperfection comes before perfection, and perfection is often a subjective opinion anyway! It is healthier to focus on helping a child to try their best instead.

Nurture Special Interests

Nurturing your child's enjoyment of an activity (be it an academic endeavour or hobby) is every bit as important as nurturing their skill.

Many parents enrol their child in lessons as soon as possible to imprint an activity in their developing brain, which helps to give them a head start with skills. Others simply try to expose their child to an activity to create and inspire enthusiasm. Regardless of which approach you favour, as a parent it is imperative that you encourage your child to explore a range of different interests.

The mind is a muscle that becomes stronger through continual exercise. The mental exercise curiosity creates will make your child's mind stronger and stronger. Research has shown curiosity to be associated with higher levels of positive emotions, lower levels of anxiety, more satisfaction with life, and greater psychological well-being.

Let Them Make Their Own Decisions

To raise a happy and confident child, it is important to give them the space and freedom to make their own decisions. In doing so, a child's mind learns how to make choices. It also helps reduce any feelings of stress, helplessness, or anxiety a child may experience if they feel controlled by someone else. An autocratic approach to parenting can sometimes result in children who are socially inept, shy, and incapable of making their own decisions.

At The High School of Glasgow, we believe in facilitating strong decision-making skills during every step of the educational process. Decisive decision-making helps solve problems promptly and creates a leadership position for the decision-makers.

Our approach is steadfast - we will always be outward, open, and accepting, with unconditional positive regard for every individual within our care. Our School motto, Sursum Semper, which translates as “ever upwards,” encapsulates our constant and unwavering commitment to improving and enriching the lives of every child who walks through our doors.

Praise Persistence

As a parent, it is vital to remember that praising your child's efforts can bolster their persistence and self-belief. This in turn means better performance in challenging tasks.

Celebrating effort and persistence is important because it is through our challenges, failures, and mistakes that we learn and grow.

Set Them Up for Success

In addition to academic goals, aims and targets associated with hobbies and extra-curricular activities will allow your child the opportunity to build their confidence and self-esteem.

Most extra-curricular groups or teams are less formal and pressurised than a typical classroom environment, making them a less intimidating environment for children to develop in.

As a parent, you want your child to find a passion or interest that will motivate them to work hard and live a full and active life. To do this you must introduce your child to a variety of subjects and pastimes. Talk to your children about what they are interested in trying and then help them get involved in that activity.

Encourage them to go beyond their comfort zone too. For example, if they are interested in sport, sign them up for a tennis class, but urge them to try a more artistic pastime as well.

Model Confidence

Being a confident parental role model is essential because you are aspirational to a child. Kids need adults to look up to, and parents that teach them good habits.

As a parent it is your job to equip your children with social and emotional skills that they will need to navigate the world.

Foster creativity and help your kids find pursuits that interest them. This will help them grow and develop as individuals. Invest in your child's success by praising them both when you are with them, and about them in the company of others.

Your children will base their levels of confidence and self-esteem upon the words that you speak to them and about them.

Manage Social Media Exposure

Daily overuse of media and technology can have a negative impact on the health of all children. At worst it may make them more prone to anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders. There are many risk factors, such as privacy endangerment, exploitation and online harassment, and cyberbullying.

As children's social media usage increases, so does the opportunity for social comparison. Negative outcomes of self-comparison can include low self-esteem, poor body image, and eating disorders.

To combat the negative aspects of your children using social media you can start by learning about the programs and apps your child is using. Show an interest in your child's online life and politely ask them questions about their online interests.

If possible, keep your child's online devices and computers in communal household areas where you can observe your child using them. You could obtain online family protection too.

Using Private School to Facilitate Confidence

An advantage of private schooling is that independent school pupils often have access to better and more diverse facilities than it is possible for a state sector school to provide.

From a greater range of inspiring and motivating extra-curricular activities, to smaller class sizes that allow for pupils to receive more attention from teachers, many private schools inadvertently have superior facilities within which help to instil confidence in pupils.

The High School of Glasgow Junior School is a special place in which each child is provided with a first-class education, incredible opportunities, and memorable learning experiences.

We prepare a firm foundation for progression, ensuring the best start in life, instilling a sense of lifelong learning, and unlocking inner confidence as our pupils conquer new skills.

The school’s family feel creates an environment that encourages ambition, giving pupils the courage to develop their passions from an early age. We nurture our children’s inquisitive nature, helping them to think critically and independently to solve problems both in and outside the classroom.
