Best Easter Holiday Activities for Kid
Knowing how to keep children entertained during the school holidays can sometimes be a daunting prospect for parents.
In this blog we'll discuss some ideas to help keep children busy in the holidays without the need to spend a fortune.
Out and About
During the school holidays, there may be lots going on in your local area that your family can enjoy, often for free. Explore your local authorities website or tourist information centres for local days out, or look in local papers and community publications to see what's going on in your area.
Libraries
Visit your local library - many libraries hold events such as story time and arts and crafts days. Libraries are also a great source of activity in themselves, with plenty of books and computers to keep children busy.
Museums
Museums and galleries often have new exhibitions and events running during the school holidays. Many art galleries put on special events for children and families - this could be just the activity to stimulate your child's artistic side!
Outdoor Activities
Sunny days are great for simple outdoor activities like picnics and ball games. This can be carried out as close to home as in the back garden! If you have a tent, you could even arrange a camping trip in your garden with the children for one night.
Gardening
Gardening is also a wonderful holiday activity and could even turn into a new hobby! It gives children an understanding of the conditions required, and the amount of effort that goes into, growing plants, as well as an understanding of where some of our food comes from.
Staying at Home
Of course, on some days during the holidays, you will find yourselves at home, but that doesn't mean anyone has to be bored! You could take the opportunity to spend some time indoors playing a favourite family board game like Scrabble or Treasure Island with your children. You could arrange a movie day with them too, choose a couple of favourite films, make some popcorn and enjoy some downtime.
Cooking
Cooking with kids can be a great way of encouraging and instilling healthy eating habits. Pick a recipe together, go shopping for the ingredients and cook something together that you can all enjoy eating afterwards. Depending on your child’s age and interests, this could be anything from a simple sponge cake to a mushroom stroganoff! Cooking and baking have many benefits for children’s learning and development.
It’s an opportunity for them to apply their maths skills to a practical example, with the measuring and weighing of ingredients and planning for cooking times. It’s also a way to test children's ability to follow instructions and read what they need to do carefully. The best part is children won't even realise that they're practising educational skills, as they’ll be having so much fun.
Scrapbooking
Create a scrapbook together using photos from your family album, or even torn from magazines. Be creative - make things together like greeting cards, or have an arts and crafts day and source some canvas and paints. Remember as a parent you don't have to try and fill every minute of every day of the school holidays. Encourage your child's imagination and independence - let them play in their room or the garden without you.
Out of School Care
At The High School of Glasgow we understand that working families may require extended childcare beyond the end of the school day. Our Out of School Care (or After-School Care) service, known as 'The High Flyers' Club', provides flexible childcare every day throughout the session, from 3:05pm until 6:00pm, for Junior 1 to Junior 6 children.
Within The High Flyers Club children partake in a programme that includes both indoor and outdoor sporting activities, craft work, games, puzzles and countless further activities - all organised and overseen by our passionate childcare staff. Pupils can be booked in on either a regular or flexible basis, depending on the needs of our parents.
Throughout the school holidays - including Easter - external organisation, 'Summer in the City', run clubs at the Senior School’s campus at Old Anniesland. Find out more about Summer in the City by clicking here.
