Advantages & Disadvantages of Private School

What is a private school?

Private schools (also often referred to as independent schools) are schools that are not funded by the government. Private schools are financed by tuition fees and most of them can offer financial assistance in the forms of bursaries which are means tested and awarded on merit.

Advantages of Private Schools

Teaching Practices

One advantage of private schools is that they often provide a wide variety of teaching methods. Group work as well as individual study gives children a greater level of freedom and often makes learning more memorable, having a positive effect on exam results.

Class Sizes

Generally speaking, private school class sizes tend to be smaller. This allows teachers to answer more questions from pupils and therefore, children may have a better learning experience. Through smaller classes, teachers can better focus on children that need a higher level of assistance in order to improve their learning results. This is not only true for classes, but also for assistance with homework or if pupils have specific problems that need to be addressed.

Range of Subjects

Private schools have much more flexibility in regards to their curriculum and the subjects they can offer in comparison to the state sector.

Although private schools do have legal requirements regarding their curriculum, these requirements still leave plenty of room for discretion and they will be able to offer their pupils plenty of subjects that might not be taught in state schools. Similarly, private schools may provide specialist extra-curricular clubs. This may include certain sports that are not offered in other schools.

Their Ability to Adapt to AI

Since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, many industries have begun adapting their business processes around Artificial Intelligence (AI). With concern growing among people regarding the lack of guidance about AI, especially as the technology is rapidly becoming an integral part of our lives, private schools benefit from having the freedom and resources to adapt their curriculum around AI.

The Department for Education (DfE) found that private school teachers were more likely to use AI than those employed by state schools. The report states that they were more likely to use AI to help with their workload. The Education Hub, from GOV.UK, discusses teachers using AI to help with writing curriculum plans and drafting teaching resources.

The report also found that they were more likely to receive information about how the technology is being used throughout education.

Disadvantages of Private Schools

Cost

A disadvantage of private schooling is that it comes at a cost and many families will not be able to access it as a result. The School offers means-tested Bursaries to candidates who display merit and drive to benefit from a High School education.

Campus Commitments

If your child attends a private school, you may find they have to stay on the school campus for longer. A pupil's day at a private school can be longer due to the length of time classes are taught, an extended lunch break and because of co-curricular activities after school such as a range of different clubs and societies.

Admissions

Many private schools have waiting lists due to limits on the maximum number of children in each year group. Therefore, if you would like to send your child to a sought after private school, particularly out with the normal years of entry, you may be placed on a waiting list. As such, it is sometimes wise to start the admissions process earlier than if you're opting to send your child to a state school. It’s also worth noting that private schools have higher admissions standard than state schools.

Educational Standards

Private schools that are known for academic excellence will try to maintain their reputation by encouraging pupils to achieve the best grades possible. Academic pressure can sometimes have a negative impact on pupils if they feel that they have failed to live up to their full potential. However many private schools provide excellent pastoral care to give support and advice to pupils, and many place emphasis on the importance of wellbeing. At the High School we firmly believe that to do well, one must first be well and this is the foundation from which all interactions in the classroom, and out, are built on.
